Rescue a recording that cannot be re-recorded
A parent’s voice on a cassette. The answering machine message you kept. A camcorder tape from 1994. These files are not content - they are the only copy of a moment, and some deserve rescue for reasons that have nothing to do with an audience. What's actually wrong with the recording
Tape hiss over everything
Analog tape has an inherent noise floor, and consumer decks recorded hot hiss on quiet voices.
The fix: AI noise reduction removes broadband hiss remarkably well - it is the flagship improvement on tape transfers, often the difference between "artifact" and "listenable".
Hum and rumble
Ground-loop hum from the transfer chain, motor rumble from the original deck.
The fix: Highpass filtering and noise reduction take out the 50/60Hz hum family and low-end rumble beneath the voice.
Muffled, dull tone
Tape loses high frequencies with age and generation copies; the voice sounds wrapped in cloth.
The fix: Careful high-frequency EQ restores intelligibility. Honesty required here: frequencies the tape no longer contains cannot be invented - we brighten what survived.

The honest part
Restoration has hard limits: what the tape physically lost is gone, badly warbling speed problems need specialist tools, and speech buried under noise at 0dB SNR stays buried.
